Let me save you the search. Paper Form 929 is no longer available. The Department of Home Affairs withdrew it: from 25 November 2024, paper Form 929 — Change of contact and/or passport details — can no longer be used. If a checklist or an old article told you to download it, that advice is out of date.
But do not relax. The form is gone; the obligations it carried are very much alive, and neglecting them still causes some of the most avoidable disasters I see in more than 27 years of practice.
What Form 929 was — and what replaced it
Form 929, Change of contact and/or passport details, was the Department's dedicated paper form for updating your contact details and passport details — whether you were a visa applicant awaiting a decision or a visa holder whose passport had changed.
It has been retired. You now update those details through the Department's online channels:
- ImmiAccount — its update-details function handles address, contact and passport changes directly, and is the fastest path for applications lodged online.
- "Change in your situation" — the Department's current guidance page on how to update your passport or contact details, which directs you to the right online mechanism for your circumstances.
The move to online is not just administrative housekeeping. It is how the Department keeps your record — and its notifications to you — accurate.
The 14-day rule still applies
The rule most people never read did not retire with the form: if you intend to change your residential address for more than 14 days while your application is being processed, you must tell the Department your new address before you move.
Both halves matter. A stay elsewhere longer than a fortnight counts, even if it feels temporary — the in-laws' place between leases, three months overseas mid-application. And the obligation is prospective: before you move, not once the boxes are unpacked.
Why it matters is the same reason it always did — notifications. Time limits for responding to requests, for commenting on adverse information, and for seeking review of a refusal run from deemed receipt at the address the Department holds, not from when the letter finds you. Every year, review rights die in mail-forwarding limbo.
Passport changes: before and after grant
The passport obligation is, if anything, more consequential — because it does not end at grant. Advise the Department of passport changes before and after a visa is granted, and where a new or additional passport is issued, provide a copy of its bio-data page so your identity can be confirmed and the records linked.
Here is the trap in practical terms. Australian visas are electronic, linked to the passport details in the Department's systems. Renew your passport, fly out, and try to board a flight home on a new passport the Department has never heard of — and you are at a check-in counter overseas while an airline decides whether you hold a visa. The fix takes minutes at the right time and days at the worst time. Update before you travel, every time, for every family member whose passport changed.
The old 929-versus-1022 line still holds
Retiring the form did not collapse the distinction between a mechanical update and a legal notification.
Updating a bare contact detail or passport is now an online update through ImmiAccount or "Change in your situation". But a change that makes an answer on your application incorrect — a new relationship, a new job, a new child — is a notification of changed circumstances under the Migration Act 1958 (Cth) s 104, made on Form 1022. An answer that was wrong when you first gave it is a Form 1023.
And one boundary that has not changed: updating your details never updated your representative's. To change or replace an authorised recipient or representative, the correct instruments remain Form 956 or Form 956A.
Common mistakes and their consequences
Hunting for a form that no longer exists. Stop looking for paper Form 929. Update online.
Missing the 14-day address rule. It survived the form. Notify before a move of more than 14 days during processing.
Not updating a new passport before travel. Your visa is linked to your passport electronically. Update before you fly.
Using an update channel for a change of circumstances. A new relationship, job or child is a Form 1022 matter under s 104, not a contact-detail update.
How this fits your application
Keeping your details current is the quiet discipline that protects everything else — the Form 80 history that must still reconcile, the Form 1300t citizenship application that needs a reachable applicant, the grant letter that has to actually arrive. If a lawyer acts for you, your Form 956 routes the Department's correspondence to them — the surest way to make sure nothing is missed.

Frequently asked questions
Is Form 929 still available?
No. Paper Form 929, Change of contact and/or passport details, was withdrawn from 25 November 2024 and can no longer be used. Update your contact and passport details through ImmiAccount or the Department's "Change in your situation" guidance instead.
How do I update my address or passport details now?
Through ImmiAccount's update-details function if your application was lodged online, or via the Department's "Change in your situation" page, which directs you to the right online channel for your circumstances.
Does the 14-day address rule still apply without Form 929?
Yes. If you intend to change your residential address for more than 14 days while your application is being processed, you must tell the Department before you move. The obligation survived the form.
Do I need to tell the Department about a new passport after my visa is granted?
Yes. Your visa is linked electronically to your passport details. Update the Department with the new bio-data page before you travel, or you risk being unable to board.
What is the difference between updating details and Form 1022?
Updating contact or passport details is now an online update. Form 1022 notifies changes in circumstances that make an answer on your application incorrect — relationships, employment, new children — under s 104 of the Migration Act 1958 (Cth).
