What is a DASP?
If you worked in Australia on a temporary visa, your employer was required to pay superannuation (super) on your behalf — typically 11.5% of your ordinary earnings. This money sits in a super fund until you retire or, if you leave Australia permanently, you can claim it back through a Departing Australia Superannuation Payment (DASP).
DASP is administered by the Australian Taxation Office (ATO). You can apply online through the ATO's DASP system once you have left Australia and your temporary visa has expired or been cancelled.
Important: Tax is deducted from your DASP before payment. Working holiday makers (Subclass 417 and 462) pay a higher rate (65%) than other temporary visa holders (35%).
Eligibility
You CAN claim if:
- You held a temporary visa (not Australian/NZ citizen)
- Your visa has expired or been cancelled
- You have physically departed Australia
- You have a super balance in an Australian fund
You CANNOT claim if:
- You are still in Australia
- You hold a valid visa (even if you've left)
- You are an Australian or New Zealand citizen
- You hold a Subclass 405 or 410 retirement visa
- You hold a permanent visa
How to claim your DASP — step by step
Confirm eligibility
You must hold (or have held) a temporary visa, have departed Australia permanently, and your visa must have expired or been cancelled.
