The primary purpose of the Character and Cancellation Advisory Panel is to provide expert advice and insights to the MIA regarding issues related to character assessment and visa cancellation within the immigration context. This panel is dedicated to enhancing understanding, evaluating policy implications, and ensuring effective strategies in these areas. It functions solely as an advisory body without executive powers, focusing on guiding and enriching the MIA’s approach to character and cancellation matters.

Scope

The Character and Cancellation Advisory Panel will advise the MIA on various aspects concerning character assessment and visa cancellation policies and practices. This includes, but is not limited to, policy development, regulatory changes, case law developments, and member advocacy.

Specifically, the panel will:

  • Consultative Group: Serve as a consultative group on legal, policy, and practical issues relevant to character assessment and visa cancellation, aiding in the MIA’s decision-making and policy-formulation processes.
  • Perspectives and Insights: Present a range of perspectives and insights on matters pertaining to character assessment and visa cancellation, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of the issues at hand.
  • Research Assessment: Assess and provide feedback on the quality, scope, and limitations of research conducted by or for the MIA in relation to character assessment and visa cancellation.
  • Guidance on Specific Aspects: Offer guidance on specific aspects of these issues, particularly where evidence is scarce or additional analysis is required.
  • Fostering Connections: Assist the MIA in fostering and maintaining connections with external research bodies, legal experts, and industry stakeholders relevant to character assessment and visa cancellation.
  • By fulfilling these responsibilities, the Character and Cancellation Advisory Panel aims to ensure informed and effective strategies within the MIA’s approach to character assessment and visa cancellation matters.
