Key facts about English tests for visas

Score requirements vary by visa

A student visa may only need IELTS 5.5, while a skilled migration visa may require IELTS 7 or 8 in every band. Always check the specific requirements for your visa subclass.

Scores expire after 3 years

Your test must have been taken within 3 years of lodging your visa application. If your scores are close to expiring, consider retaking the test before lodging.

Exemptions may apply

Citizens of the UK, USA, Canada, NZ, and Ireland are generally exempt. Education in English may also qualify. Exemptions depend on your visa subclass.

Higher scores = more points

For skilled migration, 'Proficient' English (IELTS 7) adds 10 points and 'Superior' (IELTS 8) adds 20 points. This can be the difference between an invitation and a long wait.

All tests are accepted equally

The Department of Home Affairs treats all five accepted tests as equivalent. Choose the test that suits your strengths and schedule — there is no preferred test.

One sitting only

All component scores must come from a single test sitting. You cannot combine your best Reading from one sitting with your best Writing from another.
