2119-13 Meteorologist

Studying the physics and dynamics of the atmosphere to increase understanding of weather and climate, and to forecast changes in the weather.

2119-13 Meteorologist Skill Level:
A bachelor degree or higher qualification is required. In some instances relevant experience is required in addition to the formal qualification.

2119-13 Meteorologist Tasks Include:
  • analysing and interpreting satellite photographs, remote sensing and other observational data concerning atmospheric phenomena
  • preparing weather forecasts for dissemination to the public and specific users
  • preparing warnings relating to atmospheric phenomena such as cyclones, storms or other hazards to life and property
  • investigating methods of analysis and prognosis of atmospheric conditions
  • studying climate data and using statistical methods to determine and interpret climatic trends and predict changes
  • undertaking research into the behaviour of the atmosphere
  • reviewing observational networks and the dissemination of information
  • may be supervising the work of technical officers and meteorological observers
  • may be participating in the development of computer modelling program
